Antelope Valley Transit Authority (AVTA) has served the California high desert since 1992, running local routes, commuter coaches, and dial-a-ride service for more than 450,000 residents across Lancaster, Palmdale, and unincorporated northern Los Angeles County. In March 2022, AVTA became the first transit agency in North America to run a fully zero-emission fleet.

When a transit agency electrifies its fleet, electricity replaces diesel as the fuel line in the budget — and it must track, verify, and pay for charging dozens of vehicles across depots and layover points. California's Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) offers a way to turn those electric miles into revenue, but credits materialize only if an agency can document exactly how much energy went into its vehicles and when. Without that data, the savings stay theoretical.

PowerFlex supplied the charging hardware, consulting, and charge management software behind AVTA's commuter operation. ChargePilot® by PowerFlex runs 12 dual-port chargers serving the coaches on the agency's longest routes, which carry passengers south to downtown Los Angeles, Century City, and the San Fernando Valley.

Beyond scheduling charging operations, the system gives operations staff a live view of the depot: which chargers are active, how much energy each vehicle has drawn, and where a fault is developing before it can become an issue. That same metering underpins the agency's Low Carbon Fuel Standard claims. ChargePilot® by PowerFlex captures the data AVTA needs to monetize LCFS credits, which now cover the full cost of electric fueling and return $0.21 per mile in net revenue.
