PowerFlex and Hubject Hit New Milestones for Seamless Plug&Charge Functionality for Fleets

PowerFlex has reached a major milestone on the road to a fully electrified, hassle-free future for fleets: The company has now onboarded more than 5,000 fleet chargers onto Hubject Plug&Charge, the largest deployment of its kind by any operator on the network. This represents merely a fraction of PowerFlex's total count of over 50,000 chargers managed nationally.
At the same time, Hubject has surpassed 1 million Plug&Charge–enabled vehicles throughout North America, underscoring just how quickly this technology is moving from early promise to everyday reality.
Together, these milestones signal a new era of EV charging where drivers simply plug in and charge — and fleet managers gain the visibility, security, and control they need to scale electrification confidently.
“Surpassing one million Plug&Charge-enabled vehicles in North America proves that the industry is ready for scale, and fleets are rapidly becoming our fastest-growing use case,” said Amit Bhonsle, Head of Product at Hubject. “By partnering with PowerFlex, we are bringing the security and automation of ISO 15118 directly to commercial depots — eliminating friction for drivers and ensuring the reliability that mission-critical fleets demand.”
Why Plug&Charge Is a Game-Changer for Fleet Operations
Until now, Plug&Charge has largely been associated with public charging: Drivers can quickly and easily fill up their cars while on the go, without needing to juggle different methods of managing and paying for charge sessions. But when applied to fleets, the benefits of Plug&Charge have more to do with identification and interoperability:
Authentication Standardization
With Plug&Charge, any supported vehicle can plug into any supported charger at the depot and be instantly recognized. Standardizing the way vehicles and chargers authenticate removes friction for fleet drivers by eliminating the need to tap an RFID card or use a mobile app.
Cleaner Data and Simpler Management
Because each charging session is tied to a unique digital certificate, fleet managers can see exactly which vehicle is charging, which charger it’s using, and which driver or account is associated with that session. This granular visibility supports accurate billing, reimbursement, cost allocation, and maintenance planning in addition to ensuring route readiness.
Seamless Charging Beyond the Depot
The same identification flow can apply when drivers charge at Plug&Charge-capable chargers away from home base. A driver can charge at a public station, a second depot or partner site, or even at an approved home charger. In every instance, the session is linked back to the fleet and billed correctly without extra cards or logins.
Strong Security by Design
By relying on certificate-based authentication, Plug&Charge reduces the need for less secure, ad hoc approaches to identifying vehicles and drivers. Hubject’s role as a global Plug&Charge certificate authority and trust framework helps ensure that data, payments, and identities are handled in a secure, standardized way.
Scaling Flexible Fleet Charging
PowerFlex's position as the largest charge point operator on Hubject — with thousands of fleet chargers live on the network and counting — reinforces its leadership role as a large-scale charging provider for commercial and fleet customers.
"Our goal has always been to remove the friction associated with managing electric fleets,” said Bill Shapiro, Vice President of Product at PowerFlex. “By integrating Hubject’s Plug&Charge technology with our PowerFlex X™ platform, we’ve made the charging experience as simple as plugging in a cable — allowing drivers to focus on their routes while fleet managers gain unprecedented visibility into route readiness.”
In addition to Plug&Charge capabilities, PowerFlex X also offers a streamlined Site Uploader tool to onboard new charging sites, helping companies scale their electric fleet operations quickly and efficiently.
More About Plug&Charge
Plug&Charge is a capability defined by ISO 15118, the international communication standard that governs how electric vehicles and chargers securely identify and talk to each other. ISO 15118 enables the automatic authentication of a vehicle and compatible EV charger, and allows seamless payment without the need for an app, RFID card, or credit card reader.
When a Plug&Charge–enabled vehicle connects to a Plug&Charge–enabled charging station, the vehicle and charger perform a secure “handshake” over ISO 15118. Digital certificates are used to identify the vehicle, charger operator, and driver account. Hubject acts as a central trust authority in the process, issuing and managing these certificates so that every party in the ecosystem can be validated.
