The Challenge

Meeting Growing Demand for EV Charging in a Healthcare Setting

As the number of electric vehicles in California continues to grow, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles recognized the need to provide reliable charging infrastructure at its Los Angeles campus. The hospital’s commitment to building a healthier environment for the community meant finding a solution that could support increasing demand for EV charging while allowing for future expansion and keeping infrastructure costs low.

INCENTIVES

LADWP ChargeUP • Low Carbon Fuel Standard

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles partnered with PowerFlex to install a robust EV charging network at its Los Angeles campus. The project included 103 Level 2 charging stations and 1 DC Fast charging station, all located in the hospital’s parking facility. PowerFlex’s optimization algorithm minimizes the power required to charge the entire network, enabling the installation of more stations than a typical EV setup and keeping infrastructure costs low.

The system is designed with future growth in mind. As EV use continues to increase, the charging network at CHLA is ready to scale, allowing for the addition of more stations as demand grows. By leveraging PowerFlex’s Adaptive Load Management® (ALM) software, the hospital can provide reliable charging for staff, patients, and visitors while supporting its broader sustainability initiatives and commitment to the community.

Unlike traditional charging models where every station operates at full power, ALM controls each station individually and in real time, based on charging demand, building load, and onsite generation. This approach balances energy use across the network, eliminates costly demand spikes, and enables CHLA to support up to six times more charging ports compared to conventional systems — all while maintaining reliable access for drivers and keeping operational costs low.
