PowerFlex and ASICS Complete Mississippi’s Largest Commercial Solar Rooftop

ASICS America is a subsidiary of ASICS Corp., the Japanese corporation founded in 1949 that produces footwear, sportswear, and sports equipment worldwide. ASICS stands for “Anima Sana in Corpore Sano,” the Latin phrase meaning a sound mind in a sound body. With a strong commitment to innovation and sustainability, ASICS partnered with PowerFlex to expand clean energy generation at its Byhalia, Mississippi distribution center — demonstrating leadership in both performance and environmental responsibility. The Byhalia facility now hosts the largest commercial solar rooftop system in Mississippi.

The Challenge

Advancing Sustainability in a Traditionally Underserved Solar Market

ASICS set out to advance its sustainability goals by increasing clean energy use at its Byhalia, Mississippi distribution center. However, Mississippi’s commercial solar market was largely undeveloped, presenting unique challenges in system design, permitting, and utility coordination. ASICS needed a partner with the expertise to deliver a large-scale rooftop solar project that would maximize onsite energy consumption, align with the company’s carbon reduction targets, and provide strong financial returns — all while navigating the complexities of a new solar market.

PowerFlex partnered with ASICS to design and install a 1-megawatt (MW) rooftop solar system at the Byhalia distribution center, followed by a second 1-MW expansion that doubled the site’s clean energy capacity. The combined 2-MW system is now the largest commercial solar rooftop in Mississippi, featuring nearly 3,000 solar modules. PowerFlex coordinated the interconnection agreement with the local utility, North Central Electric, and engaged local labor to complete the project with minimal disruption to ASICS’ operations. The system is designed to match onsite energy load, maximize clean energy usage, and now enables ASICS to participate in net metering, contributing power to the grid and supporting local resiliency.

“As ASICS continues towards a goal of reducing our overall CO2 emissions by 63% by 2030, today’s announcement is a strong step forward. The PowerFlex team were great partners in helping seamlessly complete the second rooftop solar project without disrupting our day-to-day business at the distribution center.”

Seamless Execution and Community Engagement

The ASICS solar project included just three months of active construction, minimizing disruption to daily operations at the Byhalia distribution center. PowerFlex’s turnkey approach included coordinating with local labor, which not only supported the regional workforce but also fostered community involvement in the project’s success. And by participating in net metering, ASICS is now able to contribute excess clean energy to the local grid, helping to bolster grid resiliency and extend the environmental benefits of the project beyond its own facility.
