Colonial Pipeline Company Reduces Carbon Footprint and Operating Costs With Solar

Colonial Pipeline Company operates the largest refined products pipeline in the United States, delivering critical energy resources across the nation. With a longstanding commitment to operational excellence and environmental stewardship, Colonial Pipeline continually seeks innovative solutions to reduce its carbon footprint and improve efficiency.

The Challenge

Implement Solar Solutions at 2 Sensitive Locations

Colonial Pipeline manages a network of critical infrastructure with substantial energy needs. The company faced the challenge of integrating clean energy solutions at two major sites in New Jersey — Chesterfield and West Deptford — while maintaining strict operational standards and reliability. Each location had unique requirements, from accommodating complex electrical systems to ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing operations. Colonial Pipeline needed a partner capable of delivering large-scale solar installations that would not only reduce carbon emissions and energy costs but also align with the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility and regulatory compliance.

PowerFlex partnered with Colonial Pipeline to design and install two ground-mounted solar energy systems at the company’s sites in New Jersey, totaling 7.4-megawatts (MW) of capacity. The 2.5-MW system at the Allentown Booster Station in Chesterfield and the 4.9-MW system at Woodbury Junction Station in West Deptford were engineered to meet Colonial’s strict operational requirements, including the use of ground-penetrating radar for electrical pole placement and the relocation of critical protection systems. PowerFlex also implemented specialized landscaping to support local wildlife habitats and incorporated advanced construction techniques to ensure safety and compliance. Together, these custom solar installations generate over 10 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean energy annually, helping Colonial Pipeline avoid 15.7 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions and 800,000 gallons of gasoline each year.
