PowerFlex Helps Target Crush Green Goals With National Portfolio of Rooftop Solar Projects

Target Corporation is one of the top ten retailers in the United States, generating more than $100 billion annually. Since the opening of the first Target location in Minnesota in 1962, the company has expanded into all 50 states and the District of Colombia with nearly 2,000 stores and 60 supply chain facilities.

The Challenge

Scale Solar Across Country to Meet Top Retailer’s Sustainability Targets

The big-box chain has made a strong commitment to sustainability in recent years through its Target Forward initiative, pledging to install 500 rooftop solar projects by 2020 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2040. To meet these lofty goals and continue to serve as an example of corporate sustainability, Target needed a clean energy partner who could build out a nationwide portfolio of solar energy systems that not only accelerated its environmental goals but also made sense from a financial perspective too.

Target chose PowerFlex to scale solar installations across the company’s entire national retail portfolio. Taking a strategic approach, PowerFlex was able to identify the sites that were most conducive to solar both in terms of system performance and project financials. PowerFlex’s team leveraged years of national experience to seek out the most lucrative incentives in solar-friendly states such as New York, New Jersey, and California, in addition to emerging markets.

In 2019, PowerFlex helped Target install its 500th rooftop solar project atop its store in Napa, California — making good on its goal to install 500 systems by the end of the decade.

Since then, PowerFlex has partnered with Target on 90+ solar projects (and counting). The projects amount to 67.9 megawatts (MW) of total solar capacity and generate 92.3 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean electricity annually — enough to power more than 7,500 homes an entire year. In addition to cutting emissions, the systems also help Target reduce energy expenses by offsetting utility electricity consumption.

PowerFlex continues to innovate for Target as part of this long-term partnership. The companies have contracted to build the single largest rooftop solar project in New York, a 7.5 MW system at the Target location in the town of Wilton.

PowerFlex is also developing several multi-technology projects in California that will combine solar generation with battery energy storage to extend the use solar energy to later in the day and maximize its sustainability and financial benefits.
