Harvard University Brings Smart EV Charging to Its Historic Ivy League Campus

Harvard University is one of the world's most prestigious research institutions, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Home to more than 20,000 students, faculty, and staff, Harvard has long led academic excellence and has made sustainability a central pillar of its campus operations and long-term institutional strategy.

The Challenge

Meeting Growing Demand for Campus EV Infrastructure

As electric vehicle adoption accelerated in the community, Harvard University recognized the need to provide reliable, accessible EV charging infrastructure on campus. At the same time, Harvard remained firmly committed to its sustainability goals, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and support clean transportation across its Cambridge campus. The challenge was to implement a solution that was both cost-effective and scalable to meet current and future demand.

Smart Level 2 Charging Designed for University Environments

INSTALLATION TYPE

  • EV Charging

INSTALLATION SIZE

  • 17 Level 2 EV Chargers

LOCATION

  • Cambridge, MA

PowerFlex partnered with Harvard University to design and deploy 17 Level 2 EV chargers at the Oxford Street parking garage. Unlike fast-charging solutions that cater to quick stops, Level 2 chargers deliver a full charge over several hours, perfectly aligning with the extended dwell times of students attending class or faculty teaching throughout the day. This approach maximizes energy efficiency while minimizing infrastructure costs, making it an economical yet impactful investment.

PowerFlex's Adaptive Load Management® technology dynamically balances power across all 17 chargers, optimizing grid draw and delivering a consistently reliable experience for drivers. The result: a purpose-built charging ecosystem that advances Harvard's commitment to sustainable campus transportation.
