Leading Fashion Company Installs Rooftop and Parking Canopy Solar Systems

Chanel Goes Solar

Chanel is a fashion and lifestyle brand offering luxury items such as clothing, fashion accessories, makeup and more. Since its founding in France in 1909, the company has expanded globally and is now recognized as one of the larg- est luxury brands in the world.

Chanel has a focus on corporate social responsibility and sustainability. In 2011, the company started Foundation Chanel, an organization that aims to improve the economic and social conditions of women and girls across the world. The foundation’s mission is to counter gender inequality through the advancement of art and culture. The company also has a goal of achieving 100% renewable energy by 2025. In order to help meet this goal, they part- nered with PowerFlex to complete onsite solar systems at their facility in Piscataway, NJ.

Solar Photovoltaic System Specifications

In total, Chanel installed two solar systems at its Piscataway facility. The first is a 1.8 MW rooftop solar system and the second is an 854 kW solar parking canopy. Combined, Chanel’s systems will produce an estimated 3,266,366 kWh annually. The clean energy produced by the systems have the environmental benefits equivalent to saving 246,863 gallons of gasoline or preserving 2,075 acres of forests a year.

Significant Financial Returns

Through the New Jersey Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SREC) Program, Chanel earns credits for every kWh of electricity its systems produce. The company can then sell those credits to the market for reve- nue. PowerFlex’s expertise in solar system financing made going solar a sound investment.
