Project Engineer

Location: New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, California (San Diego; Los Altos), Rhode Island, and Remote

Scope of Job: The Project Engineer will be responsible for providing technical support during the detailed engineering & construction stage of projects, and will be exposed to all aspects of projects. Traveling on average once a week should be expected. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in the dynamic and rapidly-growing renewable energy industry!

Responsibilities:

  • Design and engineer commercial and small utility-scale solar PV projects
  • Communicate with utilities on an ongoing basis
  • Stay up-to-date on code and policy changes that impact system design
  • Coordinate cadence with customer during design phase and construction phase
  • Coordinate design package with Engineering firms
  • Coordinate with vendors and lead procurement of materials
  • Perform inspections during the installation process
  • Oversee commissioning process
  • Assist in close out of projects with utility
  • Perform production analysis for PV systems
  • Assist Business Development team with pre-contract due diligence

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Civil or Electrical preferred) or related major
  • 2-3 years of experience in the solar PV construction or development industry
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Detail-oriented and strong analytical skills
  • Proficient in Helioscope, AutoCAD, PVSyst and Excel
  • Understands permitting & interconnection process
  • Basic understanding of financial modeling and incentive programs
  • Experience with Procore and Salesforce a plus

Project Manager

Location: California (San Diego and Los Altos) and New York

Scope of Job: The Project Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and managing all aspects of multiple solar energy projects through completion at any given time. The responsibilities include coordination with the utilities and townships, permitting, resource management, incentive management, contractor negotiation, and construction management. The Project Manager interacts with clients throughout the entire project, from contract signature until transition to our O&M team.

Responsibilities:

  • Field Operations Management
  • Manage jobsite equipment deliveries
  • Provide support to our clients, subcontractors, and team members
  • Execute the Turn-Key Installation from start to finish while staying on schedule
  • Provide feedback to improve company protocols, installation practices, and company growth
  • Complete QA/QC checks on active construction sites
  • Interfacing with clients and vendors

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2-3 years’ experience in commercial solar construction
  • NABCEP Installer Certification is a plus
  • Knowledge of Procore system
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent problem solving, team development, and critical thinking skills
  • High level of integrity with strong emphasis on making and meeting commitments
  • High sense of urgency with the ability to delegate and prioritize to meet required deadlines

Site Reliability Engineer

Location: Remote

Scope of Job: The Site Reliability Engineer works closely with the software engineering teams to build continuous improvement into their processes, infrastructure to automate the testing and deployment of software components that include the frontend and backend services, as well as assist in educating others in the arts of automation. Site Reliability Engineers take direction from Product Ownership, have complete ownership of cloud infrastructure and continuously optimize the implementation(s) as the company deploys more assets in the field.  Overall, the Site Reliability team is responsible for availability, performance, latency, efficiency, change management, monitoring, emergency response and capacity planning.

We are looking for someone that is a good mix of software and systems background, capable of being a jack-of-all-trades and a master of some, someone that is hands-on building all aspects of the software lifecycle, and someone that would put the interests of our customers above the interests of the company.

  • 4+ years of experience with public cloud infrastructure and provider services (GCP/AWS/Azure/etc)
  • 4+ years of experience in leveraging various cybersecurity, monitoring, and alarming tools
  • Ability to design, scale, maintain, and support enterprise edge compute environment (500+ sites) and retain SOC 2 certification.
  • Fluency in a significant array of varied scripting and programming languages; including but not limited to Python and/or bash.

Full Stack Developer

Location: Remote

Scope of Job: We are looking for a full stack developer to produce scalable software solutions. You’ll be part of a cross-functional team that’s responsible for the full software development life cycle, from conception to deployment. As a full stack developer, you should be comfortable around both front-end and back-end coding languages, development frameworks and third-party libraries. You should also be a team player with a knack for visual design and utility.

We are looking for a jack-of-all-trades and a master of some, someone that is comfortable with requirement gathering, architecting/designing, and implementing both frontend and backend services. You’ll be part of an agile development team building PowerFlex’s mobile and web applications for both the operational aspects and customer portals. You’ll use Javascript/React/React-Native, Expo, CSS, HTML, Python, influxDB, Grafana, GCP and AWS.

Responsibilities:

95% – Primary duties:

  1. Design/Enhance/Rebuild/Refactor existing backend and frontend services
  2. Contribute and help lead to the development of the agile software engineering processes
  3. Be proactive in writing tests and testing to ensure quality production code.
  4. Assist other members of the engineering team in the integration of various backend and frontend components

EV Service Technician

Location: Los Altos, CA

Scope of Job:

Supports the seamless installation and maintenance of EV infrastructure projects. The main responsibilities include installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, corrective maintenance, and upgrades at various EV sites.

Responsibilities:

95% – Field Service Duties

  • Perform installation of EV charging units and smart chips in the field
  • Commission Load Management systems and validate performance
  • Perform preventative maintenance, corrective maintenance, commissioning, and updates on EV charging units of various makes and models
  • Perform component level diagnostics, utilizing laptop, phase meters, and other tools, to diagnose failed units and determine required repairs.
  • Turn troubleshooting efforts into customer reports and lessons learned
  • Manage warranty issues
  • Conduct training for other technician and/or subcontractors

5%- Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience

  • Minimum 1 year experience as a field technician on power electrical equipment or related experience.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving skills
  • Hands on experience with hardware, tools, instruments and methodological analysis

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Strong computer skills – MS Office product especially Excel and Word
  • Strong electrical/electronic background relevant to EV equipment
  • Experienced in measuring voltage, current, frequency, insolation, phase rotation.

Project Engineer - Microgrids

Location: San Diego, CA or Los Altos, CA

Scope of Job: The Project Engineer – Microgrids is an exciting opportunity for an electrical engineer to catalyze a lifelong career in renewable energy, and a fundamental contributor to engineering and proliferation of distributed generation systems across North America. The Project Engineer – Microgrids will support the Sr Technical Manager to provide electrical design, analysis, planning, technical support, and supervision related to the business and development of commercial solar (PV), Storage, & microgrid projects.  This position works at the company headquarters and travels to job sites as needed.  The Project Engineer – Microgrids will also support health and safety, project design/engineering & review, project tracking and project management support, product applications review, vendor management and procurement, construction management, systems commissioning, general project administration, development of internal business systems, and O&M support.

Responsibilities:

  • 20% Support and manage tasks related to project engineering, project management, interconnection, permitting, and management of subcontractors, consultants, and vendors.
  • 10% Work with the Special Projects team and Engineering stakeholders, as well as external parties, in project development of turnkey renewable energy solutions, utilizing various types of generation technologies (PV, BESS, CHP, flywheel, etc.) and for various applications (NEM, demand management, resiliency, CCA, IPP, etc.).
  • 10% Product management, applications review, design control, and vendor management efforts related to renewable distributed energy resources (DER’s), intelligent electrical devices (IED’s), system controls (energy management systems (EMS), programmable logic controllers (PLC’s), microgrid controllers, etc.), and integrated telemetry systems.
  • 10% Drafting CAD drawings for various uses, such as interconnection applications, conceptual project design, construction wiring diagrams, etc.
  • 10% Draft, evaluate, and manage implementation strategy of newly integrated systems, ensuring conformance to design requirements and contract documents as well as national and local Codes (such as National Electric Code).
  • 5% Development and optimization of internal business systems
  • 5% Systems and project commissioning; manage site acceptance testing and quality assurance efforts
  • 5% Assist the Sr. Technical Manager in tracking project schedules and confirming the availability of material and resources to maintain the schedule.
  • 5% Manage technical coordination with utilities for reliable and safe interconnection.
  • 5% Coordinate with the Operations & Maintenance team at project commissioning and close-out, and support of system repair during system operations as necessary.
  • 5% Support safe work practices including OSHA standards, company safety programs, and policies relative to the installation of these systems.  Support enforcement of safety standards established by the client and the company to manage risk and achieve safety and health goals of no incidents and no lost time due to injury and no property damage.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience – Typically requires:

  • College degree:  BS Electrical Engineering or related/equivalent technical degree
  • Building trades experience preferred
  • 1-3 years direct experience with design and implementation of C&I and/or grid-scale power generation systems

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering and power distribution theory
  • Detail and process oriented
  • Load flow and power system analysis exposure preferred (ETAP, CYME, MATLAB, SKM, etc.)
  • Electric power distribution, generation, substation automation and power system integration
  • Understanding of modern distributed energy resources, hierarchical control, and energy management systems

  • Knowledge of SCADA systems preferred
  • PE (CA), EIT/FE, LEED AP, CEM and/or other technical certifications preferred

Product Owner

PowerFlex is looking for an experienced and technical Product Owner who is passionate about renewable energy, electric vehicles, beautiful and elegant technology, scalability, security, and supportability. We’re looking for a highly motivated individual with a genuine interest in the renewable energy sector and a passion to deliver cutting-edge products for our EV charging customers. The Technical Product Owner should be a jack-of-all-trades and a master of some, someone that is comfortable with requirement gathering, assisting in architecting/designing, and facilitating an agile, lean, and high functioning software team. This position encompasses all the aspects of a traditional PO role as well as some of the traditional aspects of a scrum master or an agile coach.

Responsibilities:

  • 25% Vision and Roadmap: Clearly understand the vision for the product and assisting in defining that vision if it is not clear to ensure that the right product is built. Ensure the product vision is clearly communicated to the delivery team and understood by the team. Understand the various users of the product, including other systems that may consume the product, in order to ensure that they are building a product that provides value to the users. Maintain the product roadmap, with upcoming short-term and long-term goals, and communicate the roadmap to the delivery team and stakeholders.
  • 25% Software Team Facilitation: Set expectations for the software team. Negotiate with stakeholders and delivery teams to prioritize work in the backlog and help maximize the value the team delivers. Define what business value means to the customer and use this definition to assess each feature/story based on business value. Maintain a well-refined and prioritized backlog of sufficient length to support the team’s velocity.
  • 25% User Stories and User Acceptance: Ensure that the team understands the context of the stories in the backlog and that the team has adequate information to deliver the stories. Conduct the necessary research and analysis to fully understand the client’s needs and requirements. Work with the delivery team to write and refine user stories. Site Supervisor (Consultant)

Position Expectations: The Site Superintendent provides on-site coordination for all phases of solar, solar+storage, and EV charging station construction projects, including managing and coordinating subcontractors, material, and equipment, ensuring that specifications are being strictly followed, and work is proceeding on schedule and within budget. The Superintendent shall be responsible for scheduling, inspections, quality control, and project site safety. The Superintendent also coordinates among Company project stakeholders, including engineering, design, procurement, construction, and O&M (Operations and Maintenance) teams. The Superintendent reports to the Project Manager or Director of Project Management or VP of Project Management.

Projected Timeframe of Position: 6-9 months

Position Location(s): Central CA, ME, Tri-state

Responsibilities

95%     Project coordination, supervision, and management, including the following:

  • Schedule and supervise all on-site and (as assigned) off-site subcontractors, consultants, and vendors, as well as ensure their completion of work within time allowed; and assure that all project work by each subcontractor and all materials supplied by any vendor fully complies with project plans, the subcontractor’s contracted scope of work or applicable specifications, applicable laws and permits, utility requirements, and applicable codes, including the National Electric Code.
  • Ensure safe work practices including OSHA standards, company safety programs and policies relative to the installation of these systems. Sr. Project Manager, Microgrids

Location:  San Diego, CA 

Scope of JobThe Microgrids Project Manager supports the company’s mission of developing, financing, constructing, and operating microgrid solar and storage projects.  The Project Manager is responsible for managing commercial microgrid opportunities from project inception to construction which are typically between 500 kW and 10 MW in size.  The Project Manager will be a consummate team player and be a self-starting, creative, and motivated individual who has a proven history of successfully developing microgrid energy projects.  This individual would thrive in a dynamic, fast paced environment. 

Responsibilities 

  • 30% – Coordinate team (which may consist of business developers, EPC project management, engineering, and third-party consultants) through site due-diligence and permitting activities; consult with team members to ensure: (1) compliance with and continuity between Project Agreements (PPAs, Options, Leases, Interconnection Agreements) which includes the monitoring of Option-to-Lease payments, contract deadlines, and permitting deadlines; and (2) that the project, as described in any permit plans remains technically and economically feasible. 
  • 20% – Assess early development opportunities from the Company’s origination team and effectively communicate project & product plans, challenges, and necessary outcomes. Maintain regional subcontractor and vendor relations and pricing matrix. Act as the project lead once the origination team has contracted with the customer.
  • 15% – Maintain accurate and up-to-date project management reporting (i.e., project development package, development schedules, construction schedules & budgets) and all diligence matters to facilitate project approvals and financing requirements.
  • 15% – Serve as the internal lead subject matter expert on microgrid technology, applicable laws, guidelines, and policy affecting preconstruction permitting including: land use and zoning approval, environmental approvals, and other approvals.

Development Engineer

Position Expectations: The Development Engineer will be responsible for assisting Powerflex’s Business Development team through the pre-contract engineering process. This individual will be involved in the overall vetting and preparing of projects for successful execution by the Project Engineering and Project Management team. Software Engineering Intern

  • Build automation software for testing of emulated customer use cases.

Qualifications: 

Education/Experience

  • Current Graduate or Undergraduate Student in Computer Science or Software Engineering

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Experience with convex optimization tools and concepts.
  • Comfortable working in a startup environment that requires strong discipline and self-motivation.
  • Experience using Linux systems, preferably Debian derivatives such as Ubuntu
  • Adequate knowledge in computer networks including Ethernet, TCP/IP, and HTTP protocols
  • Good programming skills in at least two of:  Python, Javascript, or C/C++
  • Experience with Databases: InfluxDB or other SQL like databases
  • Ability to write/ present technical material to audiences with diverse backgrounds

Project Management Summer Intern

PowerFlex is now accepting applications for a full-time summer intern to work alongside the Project Management team. The qualified candidate should be bright and hard-working, with a strong interest in construction management and renewable energy.  The intern will be exposed to all aspects of commercial solar and storage projects including marketing and business development, project financing, project engineering, with a focus on solar project construction management and administration.

This is a paid position with potential for full-time employment based on evaluation of work performance. While this position is located in our Manhattan, New York office, the eligible candidate will be working remotely on an interim basis.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with Solar Project Managers, Project Coordinators and Project Engineers on multiple aspects of a solar project
  • Arrange material deliveries, equipment Purchase Orders, subcontractor management, and budget management
  • Learn and manage different state solar incentive programs
  • Research and apply for building and electrical permits; interact with local building departments
  • Prepare client-facing project materials
  • Unify and synthesize historical project data

Project Associate Intern

Location: Los Altos, CA, San Diego, CA

Scope of Job

The Project Associate Intern will support the Implementation team on the deployment of EV charging infrastructure projects.  The primary goal is to ensure specific projects are implemented efficiently, successfully and within the agreed terms of the project. This requires constant oversight of the project to ensure activities are being performed, collecting data to analyze performance and reporting on progress. If the project is not being implemented to satisfaction, the associate should identify problems and correct as needed. 

Responsibilities: 

95% Project Associate  

  • Support Project Management team with project submittals, status updates and document management.
  • Manage application of applicable grant or subsidy program for local area 
  • Organize and maintain project documents (both locally and in project management software). 
  • Submit project related reports (as required). 
  • Work on special projects aimed to improve Project Management processes.

5% – Other duties as assigned

Education/Experience:

Engineering Intern

Location: New York, NY

POSITION EXPECTATIONS: Powerflex is now accepting applications for an engineering internship. The qualified candidates should be bright and hard-working, with a strong interest in renewable energy and engineering.

The interns will be exposed to a range of Solar PV Development activities, including system design, operations and maintenance, financing, sales and project management if desired. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in the dynamic and rapidly-growing renewable energy industry.

This is a paid part-time internship position with potential for full-time employment based on evaluation of work performance.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Available to work for at least 20 hours/week (Office hours are generally from 9 am- 6 pm, and flexible hours are allowed)
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Engineering or Science from a top-tier university
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and Excel, energy simulation experience is a plus
  • Basic understanding of photovoltaic systems and electrical components
