Sr. Engineering Manager, Western Region

Location:  Los Altos, Los Angeles, or San Diego, CA

Scope of Job: The Sr. Engineering Manager, Western Region will be responsible for managing of Engineering team on the West Coast Power team.  This team will work closely with Business Development and Project Management teams to provide technical support, electrical design, analysis, planning, and supervision related to the business and project development of commercial solar (PV), Storage, and EV Charging.  This is an excellent opportunity to develop an engineering & management career in the dynamic and rapidly growing renewable energy industry. 

Responsibilities:

  • Personnel Management
    • Management and work performance responsibility for the Power Projects Engineering team of 4-6 direct reports with varying levels
    • Lead weekly, quarterly and bi-annual meetings, check in’s and performance reviews with direct reports
    • Provide and identify appropriate training with Human Resources 
    • Maintain and encourage a culture of learning and team improvement 
    • Evaluate and drive goals within Power Projects team 
  • Execution Oversight
    • Work with PM and Engineering stakeholders, as well as external parties, in project development     and electrical engineering of turnkey renewable energy solutions, utilizing various types of generation technologies (PV, BESS and EVSE) and for various applications.
    • Support and manage tasks related to project engineering, project management, interconnection, and management of subcontractors, consultants, and vendors.
    • Work closely with the procurement team to ensure standardization of designs.
    • The engineering team will be responsible for managing all major electrical equipment procurement.
    • Oversee all equipment, engineering and utility upgrade budgets and schedules.
    • Closely coordinate with Senior Manager, Power Projects to deliver successful projects.
    • Act as project engineer on complex or high-stake projects as needed.
    • Product management, application review, document control, and vendor management efforts related to renewable distributed energy resources (DER’s), intelligent electrical devices (IED’s), system controls (energy management systems (EMS), programmable logic controllers (PLC’s), etc.), and integrated telemetry systems.
    • Support safe work practices including OSHA standards, company safety programs, and policies relative to the installation of these systems.  Support enforcement of safety standards established by the client and the company to manage risk and achieve safety and health goals of no incidents and no lost time due to injury and no property damage.
    • Represent the company as a job site representative to the project stakeholders including client, utility, authorities having jurisdiction, and community members.  Interact with integrity, always displaying a professional appearance and attitude.
    • Oversee engineering/procurement budgets and scopes for assigned projects
    • Other duties, as assigned

Supervision of Others:

  • 4 direct reports; expected to grow.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related/equivalent technical degree
  • 7+ years direct experience with design and implementation of C&I and/or grid-scale power generation systems
  • Experience managing a team
  • Building trades experience preferred

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering and power distribution theory
  • Detail and process oriented
  • Electric power distribution, generation, substation automation and power system integration
  • Understanding of modern distributed energy resources, hierarchical control, and energy management systems
  • Strong AutoCAD and computer software skills
  • PE (CA), EIT/FE, LEED AP, CEM and/or other technical certifications preferred

Business Development Analyst

Location: New York, NY or San Diego, CA

Scope of Position: The PowerFlex Business Development Analyst is responsible for supporting the organization’s core origination efforts through research, analysis, and quantitative and qualitative deal support. A Business Development Analyst must become an expert in the market/area of their focus and provide recommendations on the best course of action for the development of assigned deals.

The position requires strong analytical capabilities, financial modeling proficiency, and excellent communication skills. Candidates should be intellectually curious, have a passion for renewable energy and be self-motivated, quick-learners. The Business Development Analyst will work directly with the firm’s senior professionals and will have the opportunity to get involved in every aspect of the solar/storage/EV charging project development process, working closely with colleagues to grow the overall knowledge and effectiveness of the Team, while advancing PowerFlex’s goal to facilitate the rapid transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

Responsibilities:

The Business Development Analyst supports PowerFlex’s Business Development Directors with a variety of marketing and Business Development activities, including but not limited to:

  • Utility tariff and bill analysis

Director Asset Management and Customer Success

Location: San Diego, CA

Scope of Position: PowerFlex helps companies Go Beyond the Grid with sustainable, clean energy projects and technologies. Customer Success is vital to this mission and the sustainability of our business model. We will not be successful unless our projects are performing, and our customers are consistently delighted.  This role includes responsibilities for Asset Management (monitoring project performance, communicating results, ensuring uptime, managing vendors) and Customer Success activities (e.g., on-boarding, support, services, adoption, advocacy, retention, etc.) and outcomes (e.g., renewals, up-sell, etc.).   Additionally, this role will serve a key strategic role in supporting the prioritization of our technology roadmap based on direct customer feedback.

Responsibilities:

  • 40% – Asset Management
    • Lead Asset Management team that is responsible for monitoring alarms, outage management, preventative and unscheduled maintenance, responsible for managing cash and tax equity investor reporting, maintenance, and compliance, warranty management issues, claims.
    • Monitor revenues and manage expenses to meet project profitability targets and propose and implement solutions to improve underperforming projects.
    • Operational and P&L responsibility for projects owned or managed by PowerFlex.
    • Review monthly operating reports and present to management.
    • Accountable for accurate client billing and O&M contracts and billing.
    • Build relationships with a portfolio of O&M providers
    • Ensure that all projects are in compliance with PPAs, Storage agreements, and applicable incentive programs throughout project lifecycle with a focus and maximized revenue
    • Assist legal in creating new contracts
  • 30% Customer Success
    • Drive Customer Success Outcomes: Increase renewal rates and reduce churn, Expand our revenue in accounts through cross-sell and up-sell
    • Drive new business growth through greater advocacy and reference-ability
    • Define and Optimize Customer Lifecycle: Map customer journey, develop listening points in journey (e.g., usage, satisfaction, etc.)
    • Measure Effectiveness of Customer Success: Define operational metrics for team, establish system for tracking metrics, create cadence for review within team, report on metrics
    • Lead World-class Customer Success Team: Recruit experienced leaders for each functional role, attract high potential individual contributors into team

HR Coordinator Consultant

Location: Remote

Scope of Job: The HR Coordinator Consultant will help with the administration and coordination of the company-wide human resources policies, procedures and practices in accordance with stated corporate objectives and federal and state legal requirements. Under the leadership of the Head of HR, this individual will work closely with the Senior HR Manager and Talent Partner on all areas of HR. The ideal candidate will be a hard-working professional able to work diligently and independently under pressure. This person will be comfortable working with a high degree of attention to detail and discretion as well as incorporating new and effective ways to achieve better results.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in administering company-wide human resources policies, procedures, and practices in accordance with stated corporate objectives and federal and state legal requirements.
  • Assists in coordination of employee benefit programs including but not limited to health insurance, long term disability insurance, life insurance, COBRA, FMLA, and other programs.
  • Responds to employee’s benefit questions, resolves problems regarding access to or payment of benefits, orients newly eligible employees, and processes enrollment forms and change requests.
  • Prepares and maintains human resources and employee benefits data and reports.
  • Verifies I-9 documentation and maintains that they are current.
  • Administers safety programs, investigates accidents, and prepares reports.
  • Reviews benefit plans for compliance with government regulations.
  • Assists with processing of terminations and coordination of offboarding employees.

  • Coordinates new employee orientation and onboarding to ensure full employee file.

Insurance Manager

Location: San Diego, CA; New York, NY; hybrid

Scope of Job: We are seeking an Insurance Manager to support PowerFlex’s growth. You’ll partner with numerous organizations within the company, including Legal, Accounting, Project Management, and Sales to establish, implement and manage the company’s insurance portfolio and develop and execute procedures.

Responsibilities:

95% – Core Duties:

  • Analyze insurance needs by identifying operational, contractual, and legal requirements, risk exposures and classifying them to optimize coverage and costs
  • Establish, implement, and manage PowerFlex’s corporate insurance programs and policies through brokers and directly with insurance carriers
  • Develop best practices specific to electrical vehicle charging, solar and storage projects
  • Manage renewals and applications processes
  • Obtain COIs on a daily basis, pursuant to sales contract requirements
  • Review and revise insurance provisions in sales and purchasing contracts
  • Clearly explain insurance programs, policies, and procedures to internal stakeholders
  • Develop policies and procedures to meet the organization’s objectives, needs, and regulatory body requirements

Responsibilities:

Payroll & Benefits

  • Assist Senior Director, Human Resources in maintenance of all benefits plans and packages; ensure coverage is appropriate for state guidelines
  • Coordinate new enrollments with Onboarding Specialist during onboarding

Senior Estimating Manager

Location: New York City, San Diego, Los Angeles or Los Altos, CA

Scope of Job:

PowerFlex is seeking a Sr. Estimating Manager to oversee the capex estimating function at PowerFlex covering on-site clean energy projects for our C&I customers.

In this role you will be responsible for managing and leading the creation of capex estimates for turnkey C&I solar, battery storage and electric vehicle (EV) charging projects, including equipment and engineering costs and subcontracted labor costs. Success in this role is dependent on ability to make concurrent technical and business decisions, while owning all costing tools and processes in a high-volume sales environment. The candidate must be able to work on multiple projects at the same time, be able to develop relationships with external suppliers and internal business groups and be a reliable self-starter.

The Sr. Estimating Manager will sit on the Estimating team within Business Development, and will work closely with the Origination, Analytics, Development Engineering and Project Development teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for success, timeliness, competitiveness and accuracy of the capex estimating function
  • Manage and oversee all capex estimation up to construction-start for solar, storage and EV charging projects
  • Develop and maintain estimating best practices and train & develop junior estimators/analysts
  • Owner of all capex estimating tools, models, curves, methods and processes
  • Ensure all capex estimates fit the design, scope and customer standards associated with the project
  • Continuously track and report on the estimating team’s turnaround times and processes
  • Closely work with Procurement and Execution teams to keep a robust cost database current
  • Regularly analyze as-built capex costs and employ feedback-loops with the Execution team to influence curves
  • Ensure proper prioritization of capex estimates based on sales needs, backlog and company priorities
  • Evaluate, critique and negotiate supplier quotes; ensure quoting process is timely & accurate
  • Develop and maintain material vendor relationships to ensure accurate pre-construction quotes and scopes
  • Participate in the sales process as a subject matter expert to support winning bid strategies

Qualifications:

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher concentrating in Engineering, Construction Management, Statistics, Math or Physics
  • 5+ years of estimating experience in solar/battery storage and/or procurement of materials and services
  • 10+ years of overall business experience working on construction projects
  • Creating complex estimating models and/or financial models

Project Manager

Location: California (San Diego and Los Altos) and New York

Scope of Job: The Project Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and managing all aspects of multiple solar energy projects through completion at any given time. The responsibilities include coordination with the utilities and townships, permitting, resource management, incentive management, contractor negotiation, and construction management. The Project Manager interacts with clients throughout the entire project, from contract signature until transition to our O&M team.

Project Engineer - Microgrids

Location: San Diego, CA or Los Altos, CA

Scope of Job: The Project Engineer – Microgrids is an exciting opportunity for an electrical engineer to catalyze a lifelong career in renewable energy, and a fundamental contributor to engineering and proliferation of distributed generation systems across North America. The Project Engineer – Microgrids will support the Sr Technical Manager to provide electrical design, analysis, planning, technical support, and supervision related to the business and development of commercial solar (PV), Storage, & microgrid projects.  This position works at the company headquarters and travels to job sites as needed.  The Project Engineer – Microgrids will also support health and safety, project design/engineering & review, project tracking and project management support, product applications review, vendor management and procurement, construction management, systems commissioning, general project administration, development of internal business systems, and O&M support.

Responsibilities:

  • 20% Support and manage tasks related to project engineering, project management, interconnection, permitting, and management of subcontractors, consultants, and vendors.
  • 10% Work with the Special Projects team and Engineering stakeholders, as well as external parties, in project development of turnkey renewable energy solutions, utilizing various types of generation technologies (PV, BESS, CHP, flywheel, etc.) and for various applications (NEM, demand management, resiliency, CCA, IPP, etc.).
  • 10% Product management, applications review, design control, and vendor management efforts related to renewable distributed energy resources (DER’s), intelligent electrical devices (IED’s), system controls (energy management systems (EMS), programmable logic controllers (PLC’s), microgrid controllers, etc.), and integrated telemetry systems.
  • 10% Drafting CAD drawings for various uses, such as interconnection applications, conceptual project design, construction wiring diagrams, etc.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience – Typically requires:

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering and power distribution theory

Sr. Project Manager, Microgrids

Location:  San Diego, CA 

Scope of JobThe Microgrids Project Manager supports the company’s mission of developing, financing, constructing, and operating microgrid solar and storage projects.  The Project Manager is responsible for managing commercial microgrid opportunities from project inception to construction which are typically between 500 kW and 10 MW in size.  The Project Manager will be a consummate team player and be a self-starting, creative, and motivated individual who has a proven history of successfully developing microgrid energy projects.  This individual would thrive in a dynamic, fast paced environment. 

Responsibilities 

  • 30% – Coordinate team (which may consist of business developers, EPC project management, engineering, and third-party consultants) through site due-diligence and permitting activities; consult with team members to ensure: (1) compliance with and continuity between Project Agreements (PPAs, Options, Leases, Interconnection Agreements) which includes the monitoring of Option-to-Lease payments, contract deadlines, and permitting deadlines; and (2) that the project, as described in any permit plans remains technically and economically feasible. 
  • 20% – Assess early development opportunities from the Company’s origination team and effectively communicate project & product plans, challenges, and necessary outcomes. Maintain regional subcontractor and vendor relations and pricing matrix. Act as the project lead once the origination team has contracted with the customer.
  • 15% – Maintain accurate and up-to-date project management reporting (i.e., project development package, development schedules, construction schedules & budgets) and all diligence matters to facilitate project approvals and financing requirements.
  • 15% – Serve as the internal lead subject matter expert on microgrid technology, applicable laws, guidelines, and policy affecting preconstruction permitting including: land use and zoning approval, environmental approvals, and other approvals. 
  • 5% – Prepare summary reports including permitting memos and milestone calendars for executive, finance, and EPC team review.
  • 5% – Manage consultant solicitations for project specific requirements (e.g., wetlands, civil, zoning, etc.) and manage consultant contracts throughout project development.
  • 5% – Participate in public and private meetings with permitting stakeholders and landowners as necessary, which may include zoning and land-use approval hearings.
  • 5% – Other duties as assigned

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree: Electrical Engineering Preferred, Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering 
  • Three years’ experience in California energy project development – C&I microgrid, solar & storage

  • Working knowledge of California Building Code with ability to quickly look up site-specific considerations. 
  • Working knowledge of Rule 21 Interconnection process and considerations. 
  • NABCEP PV Installation Professional desired.

Software Engineering Intern

Scope of Job: The Software Engineering Intern will develop software, design algorithms, and build hardware and software testbeds to simulate large scale EV charging deployments.  The Software Engineering Intern will work with other Senior Engineers to replicate customer use cases for performance optimization and debugging.  The ideal candidate should have enthusiasm for learning about distributed systems and embedded systems.

Project Management Summer Intern

PowerFlex is now accepting applications for a full-time summer intern to work alongside the Project Management team. The qualified candidate should be bright and hard-working, with a strong interest in construction management and renewable energy.  The intern will be exposed to all aspects of commercial solar and storage projects including marketing and business development, project financing, project engineering, with a focus on solar project construction management and administration.

This is a paid position with potential for full-time employment based on evaluation of work performance. While this position is located in our Manhattan, New York office, the eligible candidate will be working remotely on an interim basis.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with Solar Project Managers, Project Coordinators and Project Engineers on multiple aspects of a solar project
  • Arrange material deliveries, equipment Purchase Orders, subcontractor management, and budget management
  • Learn and manage different state solar incentive programs
  • Research and apply for building and electrical permits; interact with local building departments
  • Prepare client-facing project materials
  • Unify and synthesize historical project data

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently pursuing or holds a Bachelor’s Degree
  • Interest in Project Management field
  • Able to learn quickly and operate in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
  • Exhibits skills in communication, problem solving, and critical thinking
  • Strong organizational skills and work ethic
  • Positive, solution-oriented attitude
  • Proficient in MS Office, Foxit (PDF editing); Salesforce, Smartsheets and Procore knowledge a plus

Project Associate Intern

Location: Los Altos, CA, San Diego, CA

Scope of Job

The Project Associate Intern will support the Implementation team on the deployment of EV charging infrastructure projects.  The primary goal is to ensure specific projects are implemented efficiently, successfully and within the agreed terms of the project. This requires constant oversight of the project to ensure activities are being performed, collecting data to analyze performance and reporting on progress. If the project is not being implemented to satisfaction, the associate should identify problems and correct as needed. 

Responsibilities: 

95% Project Associate  

  • Support Project Management team with project submittals, status updates and document management.
  • Manage application of applicable grant or subsidy program for local area 
  • Organize and maintain project documents (both locally and in project management software). 
  • Submit project related reports (as required). 
  • Work on special projects aimed to improve Project Management processes.

5% – Other duties as assigned 

Supervision of Others:

None at this time, but potential for future growth

Education/Experience:

  • Current or recent Graduate or Undergraduate Student in Energy, Engineering, Construction Management or related field 

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

  • Entrepreneurial, energetic and flexible personality with a bias towards action  
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, credibility and presentation skills 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, with limited supervision 
  • Candidate must be a self-starter who takes pride in accuracy and has an attention to detail. Experience in the energy industry and a passion for renewable energy is a plus.

Engineering Intern

Location: New York, NY

POSITION EXPECTATIONS: Powerflex is now accepting applications for an engineering internship. The qualified candidates should be bright and hard-working, with a strong interest in renewable energy and engineering.

The interns will be exposed to a range of Solar PV Development activities, including system design, operations and maintenance, financing, sales and project management if desired. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in the dynamic and rapidly-growing renewable energy industry.

This is a paid part-time internship position with potential for full-time employment based on evaluation of work performance.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Available to work for at least 20 hours/week (Office hours are generally from 9 am- 6 pm, and flexible hours are allowed)
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Engineering or Science
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and Excel, energy simulation experience is a plus
  • Basic understanding of photovoltaic systems and electrical components
