Steve Burns is the Vice President of Project Management at PowerFlex. He is responsible for the coordination and management of the solar implementation process, from the economic evaluation to the technical installation. Steve works hand in hand with clients, installation crews, equipment vendors and local authorities on a daily basis and has successfully managed solar installations for many corporate clients, including Target Corporation, Swiss Re, Bloomberg L.P., BJ’s, Signature Flight, Ameresco, Prologis and Cornell Tech.
As the VP of project management, I oversee all of PowerFlex’s contracted projects to ensure that they are completed on schedule and as seamlessly as possible. I manage a team of dedicated project managers and coordinators who work closely with the client, vendors, installers, townships and other stakeholders to facilitate a successful solar installation process. I take a lot of pride in being able to communicate well with our clients and set clear expectations about our work.
I was considering law school when I met Peyton Boswell, PowerFlex’s managing director, who asked me if I could help him with the business. I agreed with the intent of pursuing a law degree afterward, but I quickly realized the potential that the solar industry had to offer. I began managing commercial solar projects shortly thereafter and have been eagerly learning every aspect of the industry along the way.
I was drawn to PowerFlex because it was a mission-driven company that also had a successful business model. From the leadership on down, the people cared about providing the best solar solutions for our clients and worked hard to meet and exceed expectations.
I have two main motivations: the planet and my team. Working on solar projects every day is very rewarding, especially in light of the global climate crisis. I feel privileged every day to be a part of helping the world transition to clean energy.
My team is my other motivator. Cultivating a team of passionate and dedicated project managers in a fast-growing industry is exciting, and I enjoy working with people who also care about sustainability. I value a work environment that supports professional development and where each member can grow and learn from one another.
The solar industry is relatively young and quickly developing as new technologies and policies are introduced. It’s important to understand all these changes and remain flexible. In project management, I would say the most important skill is learning how to troubleshoot under pressure. It is how you deal with issues that arise during the installation that can set you apart from the crowd.
I’d like to be able to control the weather so that we’d never have to deal with installation delays relating to inclement weather. I could also help lessen the harmful effects droughts, wildfires and hurricanes that are gradually worsening due to climate change.
